Why is drinking tequila so popular right now?

What do Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner, and Jennifer Lawrence all have in common?

The answer? Tequila is their go-too tipple.

This blue agave-based drink is having a renaissance, especially in celebrity circles. So popular is the drink in fact, that many are choosing to own their own brands. You could call it the “George Clooney effect.” Ever since the actor launched Casamigos Tequila with Mike Meldman and Rande Gerber in 2013, more celebrities than ever have rolled out their own branded bottles.

There are of course a number of reasons for the celebrity association with this drink. It’s highly instagrammable for one. Some US based celebrities champion Tequila because of a bond with Mexico. Others believe it has wellness benefits, while several, like Rita Ora, enjoy Tequila’s association with celebrations.

Whilst tequila is after all an alcohol, which isn’t generally healthy, when consumed in moderation, various studies have shown that there are certain qualities of tequila that make the spirit a healthier option. Which could be a reason why so many celebrities making tequila the drink of their choice.

Just remember to check the label when drinking tequila. Its label must read 100% agave plant or 100% blue agave plant.

What are 3 supposed health benefits of tequila?

  1. It’s good for your bones

According to research by a Mexican scientist, the plant from which tequila is made – the blue weber agave plant – contains substances that enhance the absorption of calcium and magnesium in the body, both of which are essential minerals for maintaining bone health.

  1. It’s one of the best alcoholic drinks for fitness

On the whole, alcohol is not conducive to burning fat or building muscle. But some people, especially those training hard, want to indulge in an alcoholic drink from time to time. And when they do, top personal trainer and gym owner in South West London, Marianna Franzese suggests people stick to high quality white spirits like tequila, rather than wine or beer.

For men in particular, the alcohol you choose can have a big effect on your hormones. Ale and lagers create an environment where oestrogen can thrive which can make it difficult to add muscle. Tequila does not have this effect and so may be a better choice for those looking to bulk up.

  1. It’s been linked to weight loss

With around 60 calories per shot, compared to potentially over 160 in a glass of white wine, Tequila is considered a healthier choice than other alcoholic drinks because it has less sugar and calories than other alcoholic options. Also, unlike most distilled spirits, tequila contains agavin, a natural compound found in the agave plant which has been shown to contribute to weight management.

Research has found that tequila can help lower your blood sugar. Agavins are the sugars which occur naturally in the agave plant – they are non-digestible which means they act as a dietary fibre and also support growth of healthful microbes in the mouth and intestines. Agavins have been shown to help people feel fuller and thus eat less too. The agave plant also contains high levels of inulin, which helps the digestive system by growing good bacteria which can help to aid digestion.

As we mentioned previously, of course, all alcohol should be consumed in moderation as part of a healthy balanced diet. But if you are looking to indulge, we love Jennifer Aniston’s drink of choice, ‘The Clean Margarita’.  Made with silver tequila, fresh lime juice and a splash of Cointreau, this version omits the added sugar often used in margarita such as agave or sugar.
