As the long summer evenings slowly draw to a close, back to school season is officially upon us, and whether you’ve got small people on board or not, it’s well worth embracing. September is a chance to bounce back, sun-kissed and renewed from summer downtime to tweak your old routine and set the tone for a positive, balanced autumn. There’s nothing quite like the thrill of the new to get inspired to explore some new healthy habits and make little tweaks to help build real, consistent change.
To this end, we’re sharing some easy ways to kick start your September that will help you eat, move, think and feel better.
1. Write your resolutions down
According to a YouGov poll taken in January 2018, the two most common New Year’s resolutions people made were to eat better and to exercise more. There’s no denying that in September, lighter meals and healthier options are far more appealing than in the depths of winter, and with the mornings and evenings still light it’s a lot easier to commit to exercising.
Make a list of anything you’d like to achieve before the end of the year, and think about how you can do something every day or each week to move towards that goal. Be realistic, start by setting goals you think you can achieve and build up.
2. Organise your wardrobe
As the start of a new fashion season, September is a chance to swap summer dresses and sandals for cosy knits and winter boots, and it’s also a great chance to clear out clothes that haven’t been worn for a while. Having a streamlined wardrobe can make getting ready for work easier and quicker, giving you more time in the mornings and a less stressful start to your day. Changing up what we wear seasonally can also have a positive mental impact as we start afresh with a new uniform for the winter months.
Start by clearing out anything you haven’t worn in a year; sell on resale sites or take pieces to your local charity shops. Don’t go shopping aimlessly but make a list of key pieces you’d like for the new season, think about renting key items for the season, or eschew trends and invest in timeless items that you’ll wear again and again.
3. Make your exercise more social
Rather than meeting a friend for a drink or dinner, why not go to a gym class together or invite a friend along for a brisk evening walk? It’ll make fitting exercise into your schedule far easier, and more fun. If you’ve made plans with a friend, you’ll also be less likely to cancel, as you won’t want to let them down.
4. Adopt an approach to healthy eating you can stick to.
We all know that crash diets will set you up for failure more often than not. Weight is best lost and maintained by making food and lifestyle changes that you can stick to. You don’t need to cut out entire food groups or eat lots less to lose weight. If your goal is to feel your best for Christmas, the good news is it’s still just under three months away, leaving you plenty of time to get results.
5. Focus on the Journey, Not the Goal
All too often our ambitions are goal oriented. We persuade ourselves everything will be better when we are lighter, richer, living somewhere else. We’re comparing ourselves to some future self with the belief that we will feel better when we get there. Surely enough, our motivation wains, and our goals drift away into the distance and we repeat the cycle.
Ambitions are healthy to keep us moving in the right general direction, but to make our habits stick, we need to focus on the present. Enjoy how amazing you feel after your run, congratulate yourself with the high you get after a workout or the energy boost you get from a healthy meal.
