Dieting can often feel like a confusing time filled with mixed messages, myths and mandates for the best way to lose weight and be healthy. The reality is that much of this advice is simply not true. We don’t want you to fall victim to any diet myths that may lead you to waste time or feel unhappy or unhealthy, so we’ve rounded up some common diet myths to prove just how inaccurate they really are.


Carbs are bad for you

We can’t stress enough the importance of including all of the food groups in your diet. Demonizing specific groups- such as carbohydrates can lead to unhealthy eating habits and a lack of critical nutrients. Carbohydrates like bread, pasta, potatoes, and rice are actually great for us when eaten in moderation. Carbs are the body’s main source of energy and are also a great source of fibre, B vitamins, iron and calcium. Cutting out carbs could result in deficiencies in these vitamins and minerals, which can have a detrimental effect on the body.

Treats aren’t allowed

For some, treats can be an important part of life, and depriving yourself of the occasional treat can lead to cravings, binges, and intense feelings of guilt. The idea of never eating a treat again can be torturous and lead you to want to give up on your diet. However, enjoying the occasional treat can make dieting far easier, and make following a healthy and balanced plan much more achievable. Try not to punish yourself for slipping up and eating something you feel you shouldn’t have- there’s no harm in the occasional treat or slip up, and the strength is in being able to get back into your healthy swing again.

‘Low-fat’ foods are better for you than full fat

Though tempting, ‘low fat’ doesn’t always mean healthier or lower calorie. Oftentimes the fat in these products is replaced with more sugar or salt to make the flavour more akin to its original, meaning they can sometimes be far less healthy to eat. Natural healthy fats such as that in oily fish, avocadoes and nuts are crucial for glowing skin and lowering the risk of heart disease, so check the labels before you decide that the low-fat option is the healthier one.


Eating late will cause you to put on more weight

If you are eating healthily within a deficit then eating late shouldn’t cause you to put on weight. There are few studies to legitimise the statement that it does, and instead much of the stigma surrounds the idea that more unhealthy choices are likely to be made in the evenings. Often people experience boredom hunger late at night, as well as after-dinner snacks while relaxing. Eating too close to bedtime can cause indigestion and some sleeping problems, however, so we would recommend not eating too late for these reasons, but if you are consuming a healthy and calorie-controlled diet then eating later in the evening should have no real effect on weight loss.


Skipping meals will help you to lose weight

There’s never any need to feel hungry while on a diet and eating g healthily. When we skip meals we become hungry and therefore more likely to give in to the temptation of unhealthy foods or to eat bigger meals to compensate for the hunger. Skipping meals can also lead to feelings of tiredness and can cause a lack of specific vitamins and minerals that we need for a healthful lifestyle. Losing weight healthily should, in time, help you lose weight from the whole of your body relatively evenly, and exercise can be utilised to help tone the muscles in certain areas.


Following a very low-calorie diet is the most effective and healthy way to lose weight

While reducing calories and eating within a calorie deficit tends to be the most effective method of weight loss, cutting your calorie consumption too low can lead to a metabolism crash- making it far harder to lose weight, and can even lead to longer-term health issues.

Crash and fad diets where calorie consumption is drastically cut can have a negative effect on your metabolic rate and can alter your hunger hormones, making long-term weight management much more difficult. What’s more, when you inevitably come off this extremely calorie-restricted diet, because of your low metabolic rate, much of the weight you lost will return very quickly.


Being ‘thin’ is the only way you can be healthy

It is true that obesity can be dangerous to health, and is associated with a number of health conditions. However, reducing these risks does not equate to thinness. A mark of good health is eating a nutritious and balanced diet, as well as ensuring that you keep active so that your body stays in optimum health. Inner health, such as a reduced amount of fat around the organs (subcutaneous fat), is a great sign of healthiness, and you don’t have to be ‘thin’ to be healthy on the inside. Body shape is not a good enough representation of health, so we must never assume someone’s health based on the way they look.


Particular foods can burn away fat

There is very little evidence that foods such as chilli, celery, green tea, or grapefruit actually burn away fat, despite what rumours you may hear. The simple reality is that the best way to burn fat from our bodies is to consume a healthy and balanced diet alongside cardio exercise and weight training.


All smoothies and juices are healthy

While certain smoothies and juices, such as those made at home and filled with non-starchy vegetables such as celery, spinach and kale, can be a fantastic way to include more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants into your diets, this is not the case with all smoothies and juices. Shop-bought smoothies and juices are often packed with added sugars, calories, additives and preservatives that, when consumed in excess, can be unhealthy.

What’s more, while being juiced and blended, nutrients and fibre-rich parts of the fruit and vegetables used are left behind, meaning fructose sugar is absorbed by the body which can affect blood sugar levels. While smoothies and juices are fine in moderation, we recommend sticking to whole fruits and veg instead.


It’s easy to feel bombarded with diet ‘rules’ or ‘tips’ that can completely counteract the real meaning of being healthy. The truth is that losing weight is as straightforward as eating less, better and including exercise into your lifestyle. It may not always feel easy, and weight may not come off straight away, but the most important thing is that treating your body better in this way will mean that your overall health is improving, which is the most important thing.
